Bangalore University (BU) 2011 - BU plans a quality check on 600 affiliated colleges

Bangalore University (BU) will undertake an independent survey this year to ascertain the quality of infrastructure and academic standards in its 600-odd affiliated colleges.

At the academic council meeting on Monday, BU cleared the decks for third-party data collection on fundamental aspects of colleges, despite objections from some members on whether such an exercise would yield any result. The university is likely to grade colleges based on the survey results.

The proposal comes in the wake of increasing complaints about the quality of reports submitted by the local inquiry committee (LIC), the official team that recommends affiliation based on a field visit to a college.
Recently, 127 colleges were recommended for affiliation despite having zero admission. As per the format drafted by BU, the survey will garner information on aspects like faculty, governance, alumni industry interface, entrepreneurship etc.

"I have received complaints from students. Since the LIC teams visit colleges with prior intimation, all records are cooked up. I am sorry to admit that some recommendations of our own university members is under the scanner. I want an impartial assessment of what the colleges have," BU V-C N Prabhu Dev said.

Some members felt no action will be taken if colleges are found to have inadequate infrastructure. "Do we have the guts to close down colleges which do not meet required standards? There should be random checking of results provided by the independent agency," members said.
