DURHAM (WTVD) 2011- Durham school performance improves
Durham County superintendent Dr. Eric Becoats says new test data shows his school district has made significant gains over the last year.
Becoats released some results from the 2010-2011 North Carolina End-of-Grade and End-of-Course assessments Wednesday morning.
There were several highlights:
The district’s graduation rate is now 74 percent, an increase of 4 percent from 2009-10.
More middle students are demonstrating proficiency in algebra, bringing the total rate to 92 percent.
The number of "low performing schools" declined from 5 to 2, a 60 percent reduction.
"I am pleased to see that our overall district scores have moved in a positive direction," said Becoats in a statement. "However, my expectations and my energies will continue to be focused on higher levels of proficiency. Our strategic plan is providing the foundation to increase academic achievement."
Becoats attributed some of the improvement to new programs in the classroom aimed at improving student performance.
He said while there is improvement, he wants to focus even more on reading proficiency in grades 3 through 8.
